It was the strongest week forJapanese software in ~340 days - with 15 titles topping 30,000, 5topping 100,000 and 3 topping 250,000 units. NSMB Wii, SW3, PSP2, MSG:G.v.G, and Layton all sold well.                    Summary and a Look Ahead:
It was a staggeringly good week for video game software in Japan.Three titles topped a quarter million units for the week. It is a closecall with Professor Layton, but overall, it looks like five titlestopped 100,000 units. The major releases for the week were splitbetween Wii and PSP. The biggest of these launches was New Super MarioBros Wii at almost 900,000 units, which topped Super Smash BrothersBrawl as the biggest launch ever for the Wii in Japan. Samurai Warriors3 also performed quite well for Wii, selling over 140,000 week one fromits three software only skus. With the bundle of the game that includesa Wii, the game likely topped 155,000 week one.
For PSP, Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Gundam Next and PhantasyStar Portable 2 performed almost exactly as well as their predecessors– at ~270,000 and ~340,000 respectively.
Assuming Layton did top 100,000, this is the first week since theweek ending December 28, 2008 that five titles have topped 100,000units in Japan. For that week, White Knight Chronicles (PS3), AnimalCrossing: City Folk (Wii), Final Fantasy: Dissidia (PSP), KirbySuperstar Ultra (DS), and Wagamama Fashion: Gal’s Mode (DS) all topped100,000 units.
Beyond the five major sellers, another ten titles appear to havetopped 30,000 units for the week – excellent depth for the Japanesemarket.
In terms of preorders, Final Fantasy XIII has about 720,000preorders with less than two weeks to launch (the 800,000 figure listedbefore was a mistake on my part). A debut of 1.2m to 1.4m looks likelyat the moment. For Wii, Tales of Graces has 85,000 preorders with a fewdays left of preordering. Dragon Quest VI (DS) and Kingdom Hearts (PSP)look like they’ll be the major portable hits of January 2010.
Understanding the Japanese Preview:
Rather than saying x game for y platform sold between 20,000 and28,000 units as in the past, the preliminary data will be broken downinto charts by platform. Within these charts, there will two additionalcategories besides the rounded sales figure under ‘sales’. On the leftwill be ‘low end’ depicting the lowest amount the title likely sold forthe week, while to the right will be ‘high end’ depicting the highestamount the title likely sold for the week. As always, this data ispreliminary, and therefore, not final, but it is based on a sample. Thevarying platform market share the sample represents is why consistentsellers like Wii Fit do not always appear in the preliminary data. Sales for this report are for the week ending December 6, 2009.

Software by Platform:

Wii Software – It was a strong week for Wii software in Japan. NewSuper Mario Bros Wii came in at 894,000, a very strong start for a gamethat will probably still be selling in 2012. Samurai Warriors 3(Sengoku Musou 3) topped 140,000 on Wii which is a respectable figuregiven that a) the 140,000 does not include software bundled in the Wii+ game package, and b) Sengoku Musou 2: Mushouden came in at ~180,000week one on the much larger PS2 base in 2007. Koei appears to haveactually handled the marketing and distribution of Samurai Warriors 3well, given that the audience was not yet on Wii. Wii Fit Plus (thegame only) sold about 52,000 units. Tied in last were Kamen Riders Wiiand PokePark Wii which both sold about 39,000 units. Taiko 2, MonsterHunter 3, Wii Sports Resort, Mario Kart Wii, and Momotarau Dentetsushould all be above ~5,000 for the week in the final data – especiallysince the preliminary top twenty cut off at 12,000 units for the week.Wii hardware sales will be up substantially this week.
In the first full week of December in 2007 and 2008 Wii hardwareincreased even though the week saw no relevant software releases. Thisweek, Wii saw one huge release (NSMB Wii), a big release with its ownhardware bundle (SW3), a modestly performing Pokemon spinoff, and amodestly performing third party game (Kamen). The holiday boostprobably would have pushed Wii to 55k or so by itself. Roughlyspeaking, for this week New Super Mario Brothers Wii is probably wortha 30k bump (but it will support the Wii baseline for ages), Kamen is a5k bump, and Pokemon is a 5k bump. That leaves Samurai Warriors 3 –which is probably a 20k bump. With that as a baseline, Wii hardwareshould rise into the 100,000 to 130,000 unit range for the week.

PS3 Software – Assassin’s Creed 2 and Winning Eleven were the onlyPS3 games to chart this week. Winning Eleven actually saw a modestincrease in sales – to 21,000 units. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed 2performed pretty well for a western game in Japan, selling 47,000 unitson the PS3. Dragon Ball: Raging Blast, and Call of Duty 4: ModernWarfare (Bargain Edition) are probably going to come in around 5,000units in the final data – but as stated above, the preliminary data cutoff at 12,000 this week since software  was so strong overall. ExpectPS3 hardware sales to rise into the 43,000 to 47,000 unit range asdemand begins to build for the Japanese shopping season and FinalFantasy XIII.

X360 Software – Assassin’s Creed 2 was the only Xbox 360 game tochart in the preliminary data. It sold about 29,000 units in its firstweek, which is actually down from the previous version. Expect X360hardware sales to rise into the 3,500 to 5,500 unit range this week onAssassin’s Creed 2 and seasonal lifts.

Assassin's Creed 229,00026,00032,000
PS2 Software – No PS2 games charted in the preliminary data. ExpectPS2 hardware sales to remain in the 1,500 to 3,500 unit range for theweek.
PSP Software – The PSP had three substantial releases this week, andthey all charted although no other PSP games did. Phantasy StarPortable 2 sold 341,000 units for the week, down slightly from itspredecessor but still a very healthy total. Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundamvs. Gundam Next Plus sold 268,000 units for the week – a nearlyidentical figure to its predecessor. Tokimeki Memorial 4 came in adistant third on the PSP with sales at 53,000 units. Despite thestrength of the PSP software this week, previous iterations of thesegames did not lift much PSP hardware. There was a 0k lift for PhantasyStar Portable 1 as it was similar to other PSP games, and there was a20k lift for MSG: G vs. G 1. Thus, the impact of these titles should beeven smaller. That said the titles are still big, particularly sincePSP is now cheaper and both are releasing closer to the heart of theholiday peak and during the same week rather than months apart. ExpectPSP hardware sales to rise into the 50,000 to 65,000 unit range for theweek on holiday lifts with a bit of an extra kick from the software.

DS Software – It was a good week for DS software, despite the majorWii and PSP releases. Layton was once again the top performing DStitle, with sales at 100,000 units. Tamodatchi Collection came in at68,000 as it continues to break out. Powerful Pro Kun Pocket 12 debutedto sales of 37,000 units. Kaiju Busters and a Disney ‘Stitch’ game camein at 33,000 and 31,000 units respectively. Pokemon Heart Gold/SoulSilver came in at 49,000 (split 30,000/19,000). A number of DS gamesshould come in between 5,000 and 10,000 for the week in the final dataas well. Expect DS hardware sales to rise into the 115,000 to 130,000unit range as holiday lifts begin for the platform.
