1961年，当柏林墙开始修建、海军陆战队作为第一批美军登陆越南，伴随约瑟夫·海勒《第22条军规》的出版，Robert Zimmerman开始以Bob Dylan的名字在纽约露面。Dylan的音乐很难用几句话就概括清楚，但总的来说，他的艺术生涯大致可分为三个时期，各有各鲜明的艺术特征。最初他受W0oody Guthrie等人的影响以民歌手的身份出现，但其音乐的主题一直放在对种族歧视、人类的不公正和对战争的抗议之中。在配器上，保持木吉他为主，配以口琴、班卓琴等。这段时期他最著名的歌当数“Blowin'in the Wind”（随风飘荡）。1965年，在一次演唱会上，Dylan第一次抱着电吉他以一个摇滚歌手的姿态出现在观众面前。尽管观众们因一时无法接受他的转变而把他轰下了台，但Dylan的这次行动无疑暗示着美国民谣摇滚时代的到来，也正是他那暗含讥讽、语带象征、思想丰富的歌词才使得摇滚乐发现了可以大展宏图的另一领域。后期Dylan的音乐重又回归民谣。美国六、七十年代出色的民谣摇滚艺人／团体很多，较为著名的还有Simon ＆ Garfunkel、Joan Baez、Buffalo Springfield(NeilYoung)、Lovin Spoonful、the Byrds、the Mamas and the PaPas、Sonny ＆ Cher、Peter、Paul ＆ Mary等。民谣摇滚乐形式朴实，内涵深刻，歌词往往发入深省。从此，由抗议民谣演化而成的愤怒摇滚不再是文弱的媒介之花，而成为社会文化迅猛变化的动力中心。
