The October NPD Preview: Wii Breaks Non-Holiday Sales Record, Fable 2 = Big
Looking through the VGC archive, it lookslike Wii has broken the record sales pace for a non-holiday month thatDS set earlier in 08'. NPD will likely report Wii sold ~850k units inOctober (4 weeks) vs. 783k DS units sold in June (5 weeks)

NPD will report on USA hardware and softwaretotals for the four weeks ending November 1 on November 13 at 6:30 PMEST. Despite a marginal decrease in industry revenue in the previousmonth compared to September 2007, October 2008 was an absolute bannermonth. In the Americas, just the top ten games accounted for 4.5m unitsin software sales led by Fable II which sold hundreds of thousandsunits more than the top title in October 2007.
Hardware sales were up from 2007 as well, with Wiiin particular setting the all time non-holiday sales record for theAmericas. Earlier this year, DS sold 783,000 units in June according toNPD figures for the USA. However, that period was five weeks. Vgchartzdata shows Wii selling 934,000 units in the Americas for only fourweeks. Adjusting down to just the United States, Wii likely sold about850,000 units. Based on the VGC Americas totals, we expect NPD toreport that Nintendo also sold about 600,000 DS portables in the USA.Microsoft for its part likely sold about 300,000 Xbox 360s in the USA.We also expect NPD to report that Sony sold about 220,000 PS3s, 208,000PSPs, and about 128,000 PS2s in the USA.
On a weekly basis, across the Americas, VGC has the following hardware totals:

Software sales for the month were led by a bountyof new entries, and Nintendo’s previously released, but steady sellers.A number of notable games missed the overall top ten but still soldwell for the period. In fact, roughly two dozen games outside the topten sold over 100,000 units for the month. Guitar Hero: World Tour, with only the Xbox 360 version in the top ten is a good example ofgames that didn’t make the cutoff, as the Wii, PS3 and PS2 versions allsold over 100,000 units as well. Every platform, except for PSP, hadmultiple games sell over 100,000 units this month.
That said, the VGC top ten for the Americas is asfollows. The usual caveat applies – multiply the total by 0.9 to arriveat VGC estimates for what NPD USA figures will be for the period.

Next month, with Gears of War 2, Resistance 2,Animal Crossing, massive hardware increases, and increases for olderhits should be quite fascinating. The top ten for November shouldlargely depend on the number of Wiis available to sell, as an attachrate of six to eight is far different on 1.3m Wiis vs. the 1.75m or 2mWiis Nintendo could probably sell. |
